Romanticism- an artistic style focusing on imagination, freedom, and emotion.
· It was a reaction to the neoclassical writers who stressed order, harmony, reason, and emotional restraint.
· Artists, composers, and architects also followed this movement.
· Unlike Enlightened writers romantic writers included simple, direct language, intense feelings, and a glorification of nature.

The Romantic Hero
The romantic writers came up with a new hero. He was powerful but equal to his surroundings. The romantic hero often hid a guilty secret and faced a grim destiny.
Inspired by The Past
Romantic writers often combined history, legend, and folklore.
Music
Composers also used the techniques of Romanticism. Their music would stir deep emotions moving the audience to tears or laughter.
Art
Painters also started using Romanticism, breaking away from the strict rules of the Enlightenment. Romantics painted all type of things and people, from peasant life to royal dynasties. And the colors they used were bright and conveyed violent energy.

Realism – started in the mid-1800s, it was the attempt to represent the world as it was, without the sweet sentiments of romanticism.
· The artists would focus on the hardworking, harsh side of life.
· The artists, and writers, wanted to improve the people they depicted.

Novels
Writers start to tell the real experiences of life; like war, poverty, and crime. Think of Oliver Twist when you think of realism novels.

Drama
The play we read A Doll’s House, is an example of realistic drama. It shows real life people with real life struggles and emotions.

Arts
Artist did not emphasize imagination and perfect people; they focused on everyday life and the working class men and women.

Impressionists
Impressionism – capturing the first impression of a scene in an artist’s eyes and conveying them on paper.
· Unlike realism impressionist were able to capture a fresh and familiar view of a scene.
· They did not blend their colors.
Postimpressionism
· Included sharp brush lines or small dots, making a picture.
· A more careful, thought-out way of doing art than impressionism.
